The UW-Oshkosh women’s soccer team defeated Lawrence University 1-0 in double overtime Wednesday, Oct. 28, on J.J. Keller Field in Oshkosh.

Freshman forward Becca Blue scored the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute off of a corner kick.

Blue said she made her run at the far post and after the ball went past a couple of heads, she nailed it in the back of the goal.

“I just went through and just kneed it in,” Blue said.

Blue also said the victory will benefit the team as they face off against their conference rivals again.

“It boosts up our confidence,” Blue said. “This will help us throughout the conference tournament.”

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak by the Titans and improved their overall season record to 9-7-2.

The game was a story of two halves.

In the first half of play, Lawrence had more shots than Oshkosh nine to three and had more corner kicks by tallying four to the Titans’ zero.

In the second half, the Titans were the aggressor.  The Titans had more shots, nine to two, and more corner kicks, four to zero.

Head coach Erin Coppernoll said they came out a little sluggish to start and were able to make some adjustments at half that lead them to success.

“We slept walk through the first half, and we underestimated them,” Coppernoll said.  “We just talked about some basic things that were breaking down in our game…we cleaned those up a little bit in the second half by a little bit better possession and just finding the back of the net was the final piece.”

Coppernoll said regardless of how it looked, they earned a hard-fought victory over a good team.

“It wasn’t pretty, but a win’s a win; so that’s what we wanted to do tonight.”

The Titans squandered several scoring opportunities throughout the game. Sophomore forward Carmen Fiordellisi was unable to convert from point-blank range in the second half.

Freshman midfielder Lindsey Collette blasted a deep shot that struck the crossbar in the 34th minute, and Blue hit the crossbar again in the 60th minute to no avail.

The Titans dominated the overtime periods prior to the game-winning score. They had eight shots on goal to the Vikings’ zero and also had three corner kick opportunities to their opponents zero.

With the goal Blue posted the first goal in three games by the Titans, and she increased her point total to 11 on the season.

The victory was the Titans ninth straight versus Lawrence.

Next on tap for the Titans is the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.

The Titans will battle UW-Whitewater on Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Oshkosh.
