The women’s tennis team competed at the two-day Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis championship at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison on Saturday and Sunday.
Oshkosh took sixth place while UW-Whitewater won their third consecutive WIAC women’s tennis championship.
Six other teams competed for the championship including UW-Whitewater, UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-River Falls and UW-Stout.
“We didn’t play up to our level,” head coach Steve Francour said. “We need to better. We had some matches in the first round we should have won, but didn’t perform well enough.”
Oshkosh took sixth place out of the seven teams that competed at the tournament.
The champion, UW-Whitewater, was determined using a combination of regular season standings and the WIAC tournament standings.
The regular season standings were used to determine one-third of the championship points, while the WIAC championship results determined the remaining two-thirds. The Titans finished the tournament with a record of 1-5, which was good for 2 points.
Francour said that the team needed to play good tennis right away in order to have a successful weekend.
“The first round is key in the tournament,” Francour said.
Sophomore Emily Bostwick and junior Whitney Tornow played well in their matches and won in the first round of play at the championship.
Although Oshkosh did not place very high as a team, Bostwick and Tornow placed fourth in the tournament in No. 2 and No. 4 singles respectively.
Tornow said that despite the Titans pedestrian regular season, she thought Oshkosh could still do well in Madison.
“Going into this weekend, I feel like we all knew that at any given time anyone could beat anyone,” Tornow said. “That definitely proved to be the case this weekend...It was just who wanted it more.”
Bostwick said she was looking forward to getting back on the court and help the team improve for next year.
“Although we didn’t get the outcome we wanted this year, I think we have a lot of talent on our team and can’t wait for next season to get here so we can prove ourselves,” Bostwick said.
Along with six other athletes, Oshkosh senior Brittany Braasch was also named to the conference’s All-Sportsmanship team as well.
Those selected to the team were chosen for displaying exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.
The WIAC conference tournament ended the women’s fall tennis season and the players and coach Francour will resume play in the spring.
