The UW-Oshkosh men’s tennis team had a big day as it routed Lakeland College on Friday at the YMCA Tennis Center in Oshkosh and extended its winning streak to four with a second straight 9-0 victory.

“Lakeland had two real strong players at the top of their lineup,” head coach Steve Francour said.  “We were able to overcome what they presented to us.”

They did just that as the higher ranks squeaked out some close victories and the lower seeds started off hot and never looked back.

The singles matches were mostly lopsided victories as Nos. 3-6 gave up a combined total of three games and junior No. 2 Nate Kilsdonk won 6-3, 3-6 (10-4) while senior James Lewison also tacked on another win 7-6, 6-4.

“My opponent played really well and I played well, and I came out on top,” said Kilsdonk after a dominant third set tiebreaker.

Juniors Dustin Blackburn and Robbie Price dominated their mathes with Blackburn beating his opponent 6-1, 6-1 in the third flight and Price winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Kilsdonk partnered with Blackburn, also shut out the No. 2 Lakeland doubles team 8-0, while the first-rank duo of Lewison and Price just edged out their opponents, 9-8.

“It was a really up and down match,” Lewison said.  “I had to fight for every point, and I stayed in it mentally.”

Titans sophomores Eric Hoffmann and Adam Kasper had a convincing 8-1 doubles win to aid in the Oshkosh shutout of the Muskies.

This latest win put the Titans at 5-2 on the year with Ripon College coming to Oshkosh on Friday at 7 p.m.

“We’ve been pretty good against them [Ripon] the last couple of years, but we try not to take anyone for granted,” Francour said. “We’re just hoping we can continue to improve.”
