Men’s volleyball moves record to 4-0

Perhaps the most impressive part about the UW-Oshkosh men’s volleyball team’s performance against UW-Platteville Tuesday wasn’t the fact that they won, but rather how lopsided the win was.

In the home opener at Kolf, Oshkosh swept Platteville 25-12, 25-17 and 25-14, scoring nearly double the amount of points totaled by Platteville.

Freshmen Harris Jorgenson led the team in kills with 10, followed closely by sophomore Bill Meidenbauer with 9.

Senior Nathan Sederberg led the team in assists with 22 and senior Aaron Wayne led in digs with five.

Sederberg said he is optimistic about the team’s ability to move the ball around.

“The team played very well last night,” he said. “If we can pass well, there will be no team in the conference or nation that will be able to stop our hitters.”

Besides scoring points on offense, the Titans’ defensive play also contributed points, thanks to junior Dan Ruys’ four blocks.

“As for the blocks, that has been a real focus for our middles this year,” Ruys said. “We have enough offensive weapons on our team, so if we can turn points with our defense our team will be hard to beat.”

Although the victory came easily for the Titans, coach Brian Schaefer still saw the match as beneficial for the team.

“I think anytime you’re on the court you can work on things, and that’s basically what we did,” he said. “We’re basically a hard jump-serving team, but tonight we put some float-serves in there, so it gives a change to our blockers to do some stuff and just work on some plays.”

Schaefer also said the result of last season has led to an increase in concentration while on the court.

“I think we were focused more than we had been in the past against some teams, and that’s good,” he said. “Last year taking second in the nation kind of left us with a bitter taste in our mouth. We want to just take care of business and try to get better every single time we’re on the court.”
