The UW-Oshkosh men’s track and field team proved to be too much to overcome for the two other schools participating in the UW-Oshkosh Open as the Titans won the meet with 260 points.

Ripon College placed a distant second with 47 points with Lawrence University finishing in third with 41 points.

“We have a very, very talented team this year,” Oshkosh head coach John Zupanc said. “And it’s a more talented team than we had last year.”

Sophomore Ben Ludtke had an extremely good performance by winning the 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 61-9, which is currently the best mark in Division III for 2010.

Ludtke’s toss was good enough to automatically qualify him for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship in March.

As a result of Ludtke’s performance, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference named him as one of the two men’s track and field Athlete of the Week for meets held Jan. 18-24.

Junior Tony Baker placed second in the weight throw with a toss that was just four inches short of his teammate Ludtke’s winning mark. Baker also won the shot put with a throw of 52-4.

“You can tell that they’re a year older and the national experiences they had last year were very helpful to them,” Zupanc said of Ludtke and Baker.
