The UW-Oshkosh men’s club volleyball team continued its finals appearance streak in the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Championship held last weekend at UW-Whitewater. However, the Titans weren’t able to grab the title from season rival Lakeland College as they lost 18-25, 26-24, 14-16 in the championship match.
According to head coach Brian Schaefer the Titans had an easy ride to the finals.
“I have to say it was too easy making it to the finals,” Schaefer said. “For whatever reason we pretty much had our way with Marquette, Whitewater and La Crosse, while Lakeland was a bit more battle tested.”
Junior Tyler Boddy said he definitely expected to make it to the finals.
“We knew we were the top team to beat in the tournament,” he said. “It was just a matter of who we were going to play.”
According to Boddy, Lakeland was out for revenge after losing to the Titans in four of the last five finals.
“After beating them four times we kind of felt like we had this one in the bag,” Boddy said. “Lakeland definitely came to play and it showed. It was an intense match.”
Senior Danny Hessling led the kill category with nine while also adding one block. Boddy had six kills, three digs, two assists and one service ace. Freshman Harris Jorgenson added five kills and one dig in the match.
Meidenbauer slammed down five kills with his four digs, one assist, one block and one service ace. Sederberg had another 20+-assist game with 22 while adding three digs, one kill and one block.
Overall the Titans went 5-1 in the tournament with victories over Marquette University and UW-Whitewater on Friday and wins against UW-Platteville, UW-Stevens Point and UW-La Crosse on Saturday.
The Titans head to California this weekend in hope win the Las Vegas Open.
“We’re still one of the top teams in the nation, despite this last weekend,” Boddy added. “We’re going to go out and try to win it all.”
