Despite getting a pair of wins each from freshman Dalton Anderson and sophomore Phil Devine, the men’s swimming and diving team still lost to the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds on Saturday, 155-84.
Dalton Anderson recorded a time of 1 minute, 49 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle and sophomore John Streich came in fourth place with 1:57 to provide some more points.
Devine took first in the 1-meter dive and freshman Tim Kuckuk, who was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Diver of The Week after winning both diving events in the Titans’ first meet on Oct. 31, took third place.
The Titans’ young diving duo of Devine and Kuckuk also finished first and third in the 3-meter dive, respectively.
Kuckuk said he is optimistic about what he and Devine, who was the WIAC Diver of the Week this week, can accomplish this season in the dives.
“Phil and I both have set some high goals for this season,” Kuckuk said. “We started off pretty well, but we both feel that many improvements can be made. In the weeks to come, we would like to focus on fine tuning and perfecting our dives, and thus bump up our scores.”
Eau Claire took the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41 while Oshkosh finished in 1:43.
The Blugolds took the first two spots in the 1,650-yard freestyle, but Oshkosh’s Jordan Trentadue and sophomore Dan Herber finished third and fourth with times of 19:58 and 20:14, respectively.
In the 50-yard freestyle, sophomores Jon Dudzinski and Brian Markovich finished fourth and fifth place with times of 23.72 and 23.82 after Eau Claire took the first three spots.
The Blugolds also took the first two spots in the 400-yard individual medley followed by a third-place finish by Titan freshman Matt Engelhardt in 4:50 and a fifth-place finish by Oshkosh senior Kent Ludeman in 5:10.
Anderson also won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:59 and Ludeman finished fourth in 2:35.
Freshman Ryan Ronayne was the lone Titan in the top five in the 100-yard freestyle after finishing third with a time of 53.33.
Engelhardt and Markovich came through for the Titans again with second- and fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke.
Streich picked up some points for Oshkosh by locking up fourth place in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:26.
Dudzinski (2:26) and Ludeman (2:44) had their second good performance of the day after finishing second and fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke.
In the final event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay, Oshkosh finished four seconds behind Eau Claire.
Despite the large margin in points, head coach Jon Wilson was still pleased with the performance of his team.
“It wasn’t as bad as the score indicated,” he said. “I was hoping that more people would have a magical meet and that we could feed off of each other and give them a run. On paper, it could’ve been really competitive.”
The next competition for the Titans is against UW-La Crosse on Nov. 14.
