After a sluggish start, the Titans women's volleyball team took control of their opening round match in the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament in University Heights, Ohio against Christopher Newport University (Va.), defeating the Captains 21-25, 25-14, 25-13, 25-21 on Thursday night.
Senior middle blocker Jacque Ray led the charge with 17 kills and nine blocks. Junior libero and NCAA Division III Player of the Year Christina Cahoon tallied 40 digs in the four-set match.
UW-Oshkosh will now face Juniata College (Pa.) in the semifinals Friday at 7 p.m. The Titans defeated Juniata in San Antonio on Oct. 31 in a five-set marathon.
Juniata is ranked #1 in the country in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, while the Titans currently share the #2 ranking with Emory, who did not make the tournament.
Last year Juniata ousted Oshkosh from the tournament in the quarterfinal round by winning all three games.
The Titans finished fourth both in 1991 and 1996 in the NCAA Tournament. They will be looking to make their first championship match appearance in 15 years, when they were the 1994 national runners-up.
