Students no longer have to go to the bookstore to purchase blue books because they are now sold in MiTazas.
In the past, the 25-cent blue book was only sold through the University Bookstore in Reeve Memorial Union. Travis Swanson, a senior and Oshkosh Student Association senator, found this to be an issue on a number of occasions.
“Last spring while in Halsey, I realized I had forgotten to get a blue book for my next class in Swart,” Swanson said. “As a result I had to run from Halsey to Reeve, and back to Swart to take my exam.”
Resolving this dilemma was not so easy.
Since Sodexo, the campus food supplier, owns the merchandise in the MiTazas, and the blue books are University merchandise, Swanson had to communicate with both services.
Marty Strand, assistant director for dining operations, worked with Joe Blohm, the bookstore director, to find a common ground.
“The purchasing of the books from the bookstore at a price that would allow Sodexo to recover cost” was one of the hurdles that Strand said he ran into.
In addition, Strand said Sodexo agreed to participate to further provide a convenience to students.
This means Sodexo purchased the books to be sold by them as part of its merchandise in MiTazas.
“It simply made a lot of sense to sell blue books at MiTaza,” Blohm said.
Blue books successfully went on sale in Mi Taza late in the Spring 2009 semester.
Blue books are sold at the MiTazas in Halsey Science Center and Clow Social Science Center.
Classes ranging from foreign language to science use blue books for students to do written portions for in-class essays or exams.
