UW-Oshkosh made a $1.48 million offer to purchase the former Lincoln Elementary School from the Oshkosh Area School District. This purchase was an effort to help the University accommodate present and future campus growth. The Oshkosh school board approved the offer at their meeting on April 28.

Events are meant to relieve stress during finals week
Members of Reeve Memorial Union will be sponsoring Bye Gosh Fest and the Chancellor's Midnight Breakfast to help students unwind during finals week. On May 6 the Reeve Union Board will be hosting the yearly Bye Gosh Fest on the lawn outside of Clemans from 4-8 p.m.

The latest report from the Center on Wisconsin Strategy showed a loss of 2,200 Wisconsin jobs from February to March. According to the Wisconsin Job Watch March 2010 update, "Wisconsin's unemployment rate increased to 8.8 percent in March 2010, nearly twice its pre-recession level (4.5 percent in December 2007).”

On April 30 UW-Oshkosh Residence Life hosted a commemorative party for current and former residents of Nelson, Breese and Clemans halls. Residence Life Director Tom Fojtik said the event was intended to be a send-off for the residence halls that make up NBC Village.

Uproar of 1970 sparked by high traffic volume turns into protest against Nixon, war in Cambodia
This week marks the 40th anniversary of the Algoma Boulevard riot when an estimated 2,500 students demonstrated their dissatisfaction with President Nixon's decision to expand the war into Cambodia. The 1970s marked a decade of political unrest and social change.

World Series champion and UW-Oshkosh alumnus Jarrod Washburn added another accomplishment to the already impressive list as he was inducted into the UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame on Sunday night at Reeve Memorial Union. Basketball standout Shelley Dietz and soccer stars Ian Martin and Mark Pawlyshyn were the other former Titans joining Washburn into the Hall of Fame.

A new program called the Student Titan Employment Program was created at the beginning of the year as an additional job program to implement a new idea of a well-rounded work experience that may be integrated into all campus jobs. Created at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, STEP was the idea of Chancellor Richard Wells and was further developed by faculty senate, the Oshkosh Student Alliance, the Senate of Academic Staff, and the Staff Advisory Council according to Susan Nuernberg, the chancellor's assistant for strategic planning and office communications.

Like UW campuses, UW-Oshkosh is working on Inclusive Excellence Plans to improve the academic success of minority students and create a more welcoming atmosphere for all students, faculty and staff. In the past several years the University has conducted several studies that examined what issues might affect the academic success of minority students more than other students.

The CARE/MenCARE campus organization exists to educate the student body on issues about personal relationships. Bailey Murphy, one of the student directors of the club, said, "CARE stands for Campus Awareness and Relationship Education .... volunteers are called peer educators."

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle has signed a bill into law that puts a ban on text messaging while driving in Wisconsin. The new law "prohibits any person from composing or sending a text or electronic mail message while driving a motor vehicle," according to a press release from Sen. Alan Lasee, R-Wis.
