We at the Advance-Titan would like to extend some friendly advice to all of you that set out to celebrate Halloween.
Far from deluding ourselves or our readers, drinking will be a major component in many of your agendas. Given that assumption, you should monitor your alcohol consumption—that is assuming you are of age to drink—especially with the weather forecast for Saturday. The predicted high temperature for the day is 48 degrees with a low of 32 degrees. And while the warmth afforded to you by that last drink of whiskey or bourbon may give you a fuzzy feeling of invulnerability, remember that drinking alcohol lowers your body temperature and linked with the cold can make one more susceptible to illness than our current pandemic already disposes us.
While we know this sounds really preachy, almost as if it were coming out of your parents’ mouths, choose your costume with the elements as a consideration, if only from point A to point B. Many costumes, especially ones worn by women, are quite skimpy and offer little to no protection from the elements. So if it comes to a sexy nun/ surgeon/ Moon Unit Zappa or bundled up woman walking to the next party, choose with your health in mind.
Another hazard to your Halloween health, the UW-Oshkosh police will be out in full force, so don’t get yourselves into unwanted trouble. It makes their jobs harder than it already is and can be avoided by a little planning and foresight for the evening.
Other students who plan to party at trendier spots, i.e. Madison, be especially careful. Not only do the police section off State Street for the event, but they also bring in many police officers from other cities and counties to combat the influx of 18-24 year olds that make the pilgrimage.
Let’s make Oshkosh the new party city for Halloween, as we have the bars and determination to make it happen.
Despite these foreboding pieces of advice, don’t forget the purpose of this holiday: to have fun. Remember, college is a once-in-a-lifetime experience where joys and myriad delights can be extended through a measured dose of responsibility. So enjoy the weekends like these that allow us to be a part of the carnival and be a little extra crazy.
We all hope you keep yourselves safe during whatever activities you participate in over the weekend.
