The modern Democratic Party has traditionally taken up the causes of those most in need.
In the 1930s it was the unemployed, the poor, the unions, immigrants, Catholics and Jews. From the mid-1940s until now it was black people. Our party remained loyal to its values and was especially active in the civil rights, eventually losing the “Solid South” to the Republicans while also pushing to a lesser extent the causes of women like Chapter IX and equal pay.
The Democratic Party today must expand its concern for women. The United States is the only industrial country that does not have family leave with pay. Democrats pushed through family leave without pay. Now we must take the next step: family leave with pay. Also, too many jobs where women dominate are underpaid.
The Democratic Party must continue to support Hispanics. The future of the United States depends to a great degree on the future of Hispanics. God bless them one and all.
There are two minority groups who engender great hatred on the part of some. They otherwise do not have much in common, homosexuals and Muslims.
Homosexuals deserve every secular constitutional right including the right to marriage. Democrats really do believe in equality of basic human rights.
Muslims are not Christians. They are not Jews. They have their own Holy Book and prophet. They believe in one God. Like other religions they have their conservatives, moderates and liberals. Not all Muslims are Arabs. Some Arabs are Christian. Muslims like the rest of us must be judged by their character, by how good a citizen or person they are, not by what day they worship or what God they accept or do not accept. Democrats must invite Muslims into the party as they once did Catholics.
