Letter to the editor: “Redneck” lifestyle teaches many more positive strong values than today’s pop

Imagine that, a slam against country music. That’s only to be expected from a liberal institution such as UWO.  Sometimes it’s best to keep your uptight, city-slicker opinions to yourself. You accuse country of being today’s “pop” music, but that’s not true. Artists who have dragged the genre into that stereotype such as Taylor Swift and Miley Cirus shouldn’t even be considered “country”. They are, however, simply because they might carry an acoustic guitar while they sport cowboy boots at their shows.  Backwoods artists such as Tim McGraw have been forced to ditch some of the country feel to their songs because of the world we live in today. Regardless, the country “redneck” lifestyle teaches many more positive strong values than today’s pop music, such as love for your hometown, good times with good people, and the values of friendship, family, and freedom. What does other music such as hip-hop, metal, and pop-rock convey? The laundry list begins with sex, violence, drugs and constant relationship issues.  Nice stereotype, huh? Yeah, in country music someone might lose his dog, but no one’s out to bust heads or take advantage of a drunk girl in a club. Also, for your information, there are many artists who still bring out the true qualities of country music: look up Jason Michael Carroll or Josh Turner sometime, if Flo Rida, Pitbull and Lady Gaga don’t mind being made to look like they are hell-bound.  Whatever happened to artists like Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp? I guess they don’t have enough fire and brimstone in their music to encourage the one-night stands and young pregnancies that today’s youth are so addicted to.
