Letter to the editor: Obama’s “Hesitancy” on Afghanistan

An AP article yesterday stated that Obama's hesitancy on Afghan war build-up implies weakness. I wish world leaders had more of that kind of weakness. Clearly, President Obama does not want to send soldiers into harm's way without a clear goal, a solid plan, and an exit strategy, three aspects sorely missing from President Bush's military ventures. I know that we Americans are used to presidents who play cowboy, that say things like "Bring ‘em on" and "Mission Accomplished" without a second thought, presidents who send Americans into battle on falsified weapons reports. But it seems like our current president understands that you don't send soldiers into battle without first nailing down what we're supposed to be doing, and why. So hats off to Obama's "hesitation." Soldiers are human beings, not chess pieces. It's about time we get a president who understands that.

This letter is an example of astroturfing, the use of the internet to spread political views manufactured to look like authentic public support, in a word, "propaganda." Google "Mark Spivey," "Ellie Light" and "Ellie Jeanne Light" to see for yourself. A letter by an "Ellie (Jeanne) Light" (of Oshkosh and 61 other cities) just appeared in the Oshkosh Northwestern (1/21/2010). The American public will no longer fall for these kinds of tactics; it will inform itself and expose them!

Its great that you have memorized the platitudes of the last election. A clear goal. A solid plan. An exit strategy. What ever happened to change? Change isnt still being stuck in a war to build a pipeline through Afghanistan. Change isnt the continued subjugation of Iraqis nor our Army being deployed in roughly 1000 places around the globe (Georgia, Korea, Japan, Germany, Panama, Okinawa etc,). Change is not continuing to allow 1 million children to live on the streets of America. Change is not 47 million without health insurance. I realize Obama inherited this mess but change is putting your foot down and saying no to the fascists who keep us going down the path that is leading to a depression that will make the first one seem small in comparison. This country is losing between 1.5 and 2 million jobs a year and we are running out of time. Another "beer" summit is not going to fix things. We wanted change and instead we got Bill Clinton in "blackface".
