As we settle into the first week of the new semester of a new year, we thought we would give some credit where it is due, namely to the University for getting the new B&G Diner open for the start of the semester.
Yes, it could have been done this past semester so students could have had more dining options at Reeve Union, but by delaying the project the University saved nearly $100,000, according to Director of Reeve Memorial Union and Dining Services Randy Hedge.
The new diner is a deviation from past food options at the Union, namely it is American food, and not fast food like what has inhabited Reeve previously.
Godfather’s Pizza was the previous food option in that space and its menu wasn’t very diverse. The new diner offers a range of options for hungry students.
The diner offers burgers, specialty sandwiches, chicken strips, fries and brats along with the traditional sides offered by the Union.
After suffering a semester with three dining options, having a fourth option—and one that has a wider variety of food than Jump Asian, Sub Connection and Titan Taco—is a welcomed change.
The food at B&G is pretty good too.
However, because the diner is new there are still some kinks to work out.
The service is quite slow, mainly because the people who work the registers are not yet familiar with how to type in orders, and, on top of that, because it is a new place it has been receiving a large amount of traffic, which exacerbates the slow service.
One would expect that the food would take a little longer to get out because it is made to order, which is a good thing because you know you aren’t getting a cold burger that has been sitting under a heating lamp for an hour.
Kudos to the University for getting the diner done on time while also undergoing two other larger construction projects.
